Below, for example, is a static view of Israel during the Roman period.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/pelagios-project.blogspot.com\/2012\/09\/a-digital-map-of-roman-empire.html\">blog post about the map<\/a> discusses how they created it (<a href=\"http:\/\/pelagios.dme.ait.ac.at\/maps\/greco-roman\/about.html\">plus bonus technical background<\/a>). I\u2019m most impressed by how attractive the maps are\u2014a lot of online maps present you the data but don\u2019t try to be beautiful; this map succeeds on both counts.<\/p>\n<p>More generally, the Pelagios Project, which I admit I hadn\u2019t heard of before today, incorporates linked data to help people study the ancient world.
