How to Get the ESV for Free on Your iPhone

Update April 2010: The ESV is no longer available for free on Kindle. Crossway has, however, made available a free ESV iPhone app.

Want a free ESV Bible on your iPhone or iPod Touch? An unusual confluence of events makes it possible (unless Crossway starts charging for the Kindle ESV again):

  1. Install the Kindle app from the App Store on your iPhone.
  2. Enter your Amazon account info into the Kindle app.
  3. Visit the Kindle ESV page on Amazon.com.
  4. Click the “Buy now with 1-Click” button (or sign in if necessary).
  5. Choose your iPhone from the dropdown menu and “Continue.”
  6. Restart the Kindle app on your iPhone and wait for the ESV to download. It took my iPhone about two minutes over wi-fi.
  7. Start reading.

The ESV shows up in the list of available books. Browsing John shows the ESV text and navigation elements.

Since neither the Kindle app nor the Kindle iPhone is designed for reading the Bible, navigation can be frustrating. On the other hand, you now have a complete local copy of the ESV Bible on your iPhone without having to pay either for the ESV or for the Kindle.

    Why does the URL for this page include “-for-a-limited-time”? The ESV Study Bible is for a limited time (until the end of March 2009), but the ESV on Kindle is free forever, after you have downloaded it. Isn’t it?

    @JC: It’s free to download as long as Crossway and Amazon keep the ESV Kindle edition free to download. If they ever start charging for it again, then people who have already downloaded it will be able to keep it for free, but new downloaders will have to pay.

    My original assumption in this post was that Crossway planned to yank the free version after a while (hence the “limited time”). However, after contacting them, I learned that that may or may not be the case. My guess is that it depends mostly on Amazon, which has bandwidth costs on both every download and, with WhisperSync, every time you read the book.

    Sadly, the Kindle app doesn’t appear to be downloadable outside the US.
