Moses brought their case before the Lord.
And they put him in custody, till the will of the Lord should be clear to them. Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
I would lay my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments.
They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him.
And Moses said to them, “Wait, that I may hear what the Lord will command concerning you.”
There I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak with you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.
And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God; when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.” Moses' father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone. Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God,
