750 Memory Verses for You

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Download 750 verses (or short combination of verses) for your memory work or as the basis for your own list of verses. The Bible text in the file is the ESV and is therefore copyrighted, but the compilation of actual verse references is available under the usual (for CC-BY license. Do what you like with them.

The verses appear in descending order of popularity (as determined by an analysis of verses on this site), so if you’re only looking for 100 verses, you can just grab the first 100. There are 750 total to give you more than two years’ worth of daily verses, if you want.

When I was putting together a list of daily memory verses a few years ago, I was surprised to discover that I couldn’t find a freely usable list of verses: I ended up combing through a bunch of books and combining various sources to produce a list of about 400 verses. If you’re doing something similar, why should you go through the same pain?

What Are the Most Popular Verses in the Bible? It Depends Whom You Ask

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Update May 15, 2009: Bible Gateway has published the 100 most-read verses at Bible Gateway; I updated the post to include this new data.

Here are the results of three four different attempts to quantify the 100 most popular verses in the Bible. Of the 278 verses in the table, only thirty-six appear in at least three of the four lists. Thus, a “top 100” verse list will largely depend on the data source (in other words, it reflects a sample bias).

The ESV data has an unusual number of verses from Genesis and Exodus (many of them obscure, in my opinion). The TopVerses data has lots of verses from John not found in the other data sets. Similarly, the data contains many verses from Psalms and Proverbs. The Bible Gateway data features more verses from Hebrews.

Rom.1.16 Rom.1.16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
Rom.1.18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Rom.1.20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Rom.3.10 As it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one….”

Rom.8.30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
Rom.8.31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Rom.8.38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers….
Rom.8.39 Nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1Cor.2.9 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”….
1Cor.6.9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality….

To my knowledge, three organizations have quantified the most popular verses in the Bible:

  1. The ESV Blog in 2005 published an analysis of search data from their website.
  2. in 2007 counted “how often every Bible verse is referenced in web pages across the internet.” I’m not positive about their methodology; it sounds like it went beyond a simple page count in a Google search. Their list is copyright
  3. in May 2009 published an analysis of 25 million searches from their website. Even this data set has quirks: Acts 18:11 only appears, I think, because people look at it in conjunction with Acts 18:9-10. Their list is copyright Bible Gateway.

In addition, I analyzed the most popular verses used on this site; the results appear in the table.
